The Document Checklist for Your SARS Tax Return
The single biggest reason South Africans overpay tax is simple: they file without the documents that unlock their deductions. SARS won't remind you what you're owed — you have to claim it. Here's the complete checklist of what to gather before you file for the 2025/26 tax year.
The essentials (you can't file without these)
- IRP5 / IT3(a) — your employee tax certificate. Your employer submits it to SARS, but you need your copy to check every figure.
- Bank statements — 12 months. They're the paper trail behind your income and claimable expenses.
- Your tax number and ID — to confirm your identity on eFiling.
The documents that actually save you money
These are the ones people forget — and each one can reduce what you owe:
- Medical aid tax certificate — for your medical scheme fees tax credit, plus any out-of-pocket medical expenses.
- Retirement annuity (RA) certificate — contributions to an RA are deductible within the limits set by law, and this is one of the largest deductions most taxpayers can claim.
- IT3(b) and IT3(c) certificates — for interest, dividends, and capital gains from your investments.
- Travel logbook — if you receive a travel allowance, no logbook means no claim. It has to be accurate and contemporaneous.
- Home-office records — if you qualify, the portion of rent, electricity and rates tied to a dedicated work space.
- Section 18A donation receipts — donations to approved public benefit organisations are deductible within limits.
If you have more than a salary
Rental income, freelance or business income, and multiple IRP5s all add supporting documents — lease agreements, invoices, expense receipts. The more income sources you have, the more a structured process matters, because that's where deductions get missed.
The mistake to avoid
Don't wait for filing season to start hunting for paperwork. The taxpayers who claim the most are the ones who gather documents year-round, so that when the season opens they file in minutes — not panic in October.
This is exactly what ClaimX is built to do: you upload what you have, and it reads each document, matches every figure to the correct SARS source code, and flags the deductions you may be entitled to — so nothing slips through.
Not tax advice. ClaimX is a tax preparation tool, not a registered tax practitioner. Tax rules, source codes and thresholds change — verify specifics at sars.gov.za or with a qualified professional before you file.
